Cuban Archaeologists Discover Remains of Extinguished Species
Havana, (PL).- Cuban archaeologists found the remains of a tropical seal at Valle de Yumuri, east of the Cuban capital, as reported by Cuban newspaper Granma. Granma said the scientists discovered three bone fragments of the animal -which is considered an extinguished species- in good state of conservation in the zone of Rio Chico. Adrian Alvarez, secretary of the Cuban Archaeology Associations in the Cuban province of Matanzas said the extinguished mammal was part of the diet for the crew accompanying Christopher Columbus in his second expedition in 1494 to the so-called New World. Rio Chico is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Cuba. It was in this zone where a fossil tooth from a Carcharodon megalodon shark, tools made of shell and silex, tinctorial stones and collar beads were once found.
